TODAY IN THE CLOSET: SCARVES 101

Every fall I like to do a post about how to tie a scarf. It seems so simple. But when you see someone looking so fabulous in a scarf, who hasn't said "how come it looks so good on her?" Am I right or am I right?!?  It's like anything else, once you know the tricks of the trade, it's simple. And there is no other accessory that can so quicly take an outfit from drab to fab. Not to mention it's the only article of clothing in your closet that I guarentee will still fit you no matter how many deserts you accidently eat.
  • Drape It ~ Yup, that's it! Just throw it over your neck like you're a hanger. Yes, just drape it!
  • The Knot ~ Start by draping it, then tie a simple knot and let it hang a bit low from your neck. You can tuck under the ends and make it look like an infinity scarf or let them just hang, or flip the knot to the side.
  • The Backwards Tie ~ Place the scarf evenly with the middle against your neck facing backwards, cross it in the back and let the ends hang in down in front, or tie the ends, wa-la! (my favorite)
  • The Button ~ Fold the scarf in half and wrap it around your neck with both ends to one side and then seperate the scarf in the middle at the fold and put the ends through. This one give you a nice fluffy look.
Nicole Richie just drapes it, it looks pretty chic on her head too!
Jessica Alba in variations of the knot.
Reese Witherspoon with a simple knot.
Jennifer Aniston does a great backwards tie. This looks great with extra chunky scarves and if you need to keep warm, this one will do the trick.
Cameron Diaz also rocks the backwards tie with an extra large scarf. These are great because they double as shawls, super useful if you're traveling.  The only difference between this look and the one above is that the scarf hangs loose where as above it's tied.
Blake Lively and Hilary Duff like the button.
If you don't have a go to scarf in your wardrobe here's a few that are versatile and reasonably priced. And if you still have trouble getting it to look right just buy yourself an infinity scarf and all you have to do is put in on and you're good to go!

JOAN RIVERS - from drab to fab

If ever there is a life that went from drabulous to fabulous it was Joan Rivers, the woman who Entered Talking. I read her book Enter Talking back in 1986 and I was a fan of hers as a teenager. I wanted to be an actress back then but I was shy and had no guts, (quite a different woman then I am today.)  I believe I was looking for the outspoken, the person to tell me that dreaming to live bold was OK, and then I saw Joan Rivers on TV. I bought her book and I bought her album (yes an album!) I remember so clearly sitting on my parents couch hearing Joan (on my record player) ramble off a monologue about going to the gynecologist. Everything from the stirrups to the 'BIG' shave and I had never heard anyone talk about those things before. No one was that open back then. And then I went to see her live at Westbury Music Fair, I was so excited. Her humor was self deprecating. It was a relief, it was a comfort and it was damn well hysterical. I began to see how the things I kept inside, which felt like painful secrets were really just real life and completely and utterly laughable. I think that book and that comedy album helped me become the writer that I am today. And I know for sure that Joan Rivers, unbeknownst to her, is the person that taught me how to laugh at myself.

OK enough about me, what I really want to point out is that the woman Joan Rivers was the day she died was an 81 year old woman. An 81 year old at the height of her career, finding the most consistent and financial success that she had ever found during all her 60 plus years in the entertainment industry.  Again let me stress SHE WAS 81!!!!

If ever you wondered or poo poo'd the expression 'when you look good you feel good', just think of Joan. Yes, maybe no one thought of her as being 81 because of all her plastic surgeries making her look like a mere 60 something, but that doesn't explain the stamina. The stamina to do an entire stand up performance the night before she was having surgery on her vocal cords. The stamina to be bi-coastal and conquer jet lag from NY to LA two times a week! The stamina to host, full time, The Fashion Police, be hands on in the selling of her QVC jewelry, fashion and beauty lines, maintain good health and life long friendships. Are you tired just reading this? 81, she was 81!

This is inspirational and whether you found her funny, offensive, or you just didn't care one way or an other, pay attention to the fact that she was as sharp as a tack. Sharp enough to memorize her stand up, sharp enough to ad-lib on The Fashion Police and in interviews. Her mind was constantly in use and therefore usable. And that's what I'm talking about. USE IT OR LOSE IT.

I'll leave you with some other inspirational women, just to solidify my point, which is (in case you didn't get it) you are never too old, it's never too late, age is just a number, it's what you think of yourself that is EVERYTHING!!!!

Betty White, the poster girl for perky, happy, enthusiastic and down right lovable. At 92 Betty stars in Hot In Cleveland, at 90 she began hosting and executive producing the show Off Their Rockers, she lists first on her resume 'Animal Activist' as her profession and gives countless hours to that cause.
And if that's not enough there's her music video called 'I'm Still Hot' with pop star Luciana in which she raps "I'm Smokin hot in the world...I'm still a Golden Girl...I may be a senior so what... I'm still hot." And at 92 she has a twitter account @bettywhite, oh yes she does.

OK so there are plenty of celebs that are still going strong and have money for a little nip tuck but here's a few non celebs you may not know of, equally as fabulous.

Ida Keeling, 4'6" and 83 lbs, broke a world record for being the oldest woman to run a 60 meter race in 29.86 seconds, when she was 95!!!!  Ida started running at age 67, today she says she feels younger than ever, lives alone in the Bronx and this past August, at age 99, she ran a 100 meter race in Ohio. No, she didn't win, but who cares, she did it!

Gitte Lee, who modeled in Europe for 50 years, returns to the world of modeling as she approaches 80 years young. Her style is still flawless.

Designer Iris Apfel, at 90 has a new make-up collection with MAC, an eye glass collection with Eye-Bobs and a line on the Home Shopping Network and YOOX. And, if that's not enough, she teaches a fashion program at the University of Texas at Austin, they made her a professor!

Fab Finds Friday!

Happy Fab Finds Friday!  And TGIF.  OK, don't hate me but I'm going to use the F word. Yes, FALL.  I know, I know, we are all basking in the joy that is summer, toes in the sand, my butt on my pool raft, day trips, big trips, dinning alfresco. But you just can't stop the calender and you can't stop the...

Yes, it's here, along with coats, boots, and sweaters, and prices go back up on August 8th.  This is a great time to invest in a designer piece you may be coveting since the discounts are substantial. For me it was the Tory Burch 'Eloise' Riding boot, more than half off! And just as I was about to post their beautiful picture, up came that dreaded message, 'No Longer Available'. Whaaaat?! the boots I've mooned over for a year sold out before I could even pry my credit card from its holster.

While I try and get over it I've pulled a few fab find picks for you.

DO, DON'T AND GET BACK IN THE CLOSET

How To Mix Those Stripes ~ I find stripes to be one of the easiest things to wear, pretty much everyone looks good in a stripe shirt. And it's so French, really, how can you go wrong. But I do get asked a lot how to pair stripes other than with the obvious, denim jeans, and even trickier, with other patterns.

When my daughter reached that stage every kid gets to where they want to be completely independent and dress themselves for school, she was only 6! I remember profusely apologizing to her kindergarten teachers for the strain on their eyes as she arrived every day in some ensemble involving plaid, stripes and dots, usually topped off with a hat and some sparkly shoes. Imagine, now she's the one sending me back to the closet!

This is what came to my mind when mixed patterns started showing up on the runway a few seasons back as a good thing!  At first I didn't get it because it reminded me of all those crazy little miss matched outfits, but then I began to notice how gorgeous it looked when it was done in the right combinations.  And that's the key because if it's not the right combination you just look ridiculous or like you're channeling your inner 6 year old.

3 key tips to keep in mind:

1. Leopard (and I'm a fan) looks great with stripes. Don't ask me why, it just does. BUT, only a little, a scarf, shoes, bag. Sometimes there's an exception but it's rare.
2. The hardest thing to pair with stripes is a bold print. If you look in the mirror and say 'hmm I'm not sure', get back in the closet. Go with your first gut reaction.
3. Be subtle!  You're already breaking the mold by pattern mixing, you don't need to be overwhelming.

Here are a few mixes with stripes that look perfect, polished and pulled together.

DO

Keeping in the same color scheme and same pattern proportion make this one of my favorite combos.

Just a peek of leopard looks great with this pink and gold sweater. Notice the gold in the sweater matches the gold in the leopard. See, there is some rhyme and reason.
This looks great because the dots and stripes are the same proportion.
How all these patterns work together topped off with the striped skirt border, who knows, it just does, some things we don't questions, especially when they're on Olivia Palermo.
Very conservative looking but it works. I hope she had on heels and red lipstick.

Love, love, love everything about this.

Here's a good example of two different color stripes working together for the greater good. It works because the skirt only has one stripe on the bottom. If the entire skirt was striped it would be too much.
I adore this combo of the bright pink and the navy and white stripe. The leopard clutch is a great addition.

This works because the overall pattern on the dress is sized proportionate to the stripes on the coat.

DON'T THESE WE'RE SENDING BACK TO THE CLOSET
The pattern on this skirt is big and way to bold for a thin striped T shirt. It gets over powered and makes her look out of proportion. This type of striped Tee-shirt looks good with jeans. The skirt would look good with a matching bandeau, on a tropical island. (only)
Nice pieces, just not together. Too much leopard over powering the look.
All of these are great pieces, just not together.  The checked blouse works great with the sweater, change for a solid bottom. The sweater would work well alone with the skirt. But as a threesome, just a little too much.
Again a case of leopard overkill. The stripes are too wide to work with it, a solid black skirt with a leopard belt would work better.
Some people like this, for me it's a don't.
Scroll down on this one to where the shirt ends so you can only see the pants and the coat. Much better right!?  It needs a solid white or black top.

AND NOW FOR THE CLASSICS (AND MY PERSONAL FAVS) NO MIXING REQUIRED

Insta~Bits of Summer

June went by so fast didn't it? It was a fun month filled with a lot of action at our house. And I document, have iphone will travel. Here are my Insta~bits of summer so far...
An impromptu stop along Lake Chumash driving home from my nieces birthday party up North. Which explains the 2nd picture of my husband trying to keep up with her on the rock wall. Yeah, she's ahead, but she's 9  ~ Balloon Festival in AZ, so stunning ~ Cactus on a hike with my inlaws in AZ.
Grapes from our own grape vine! ~ The view from my pool raft, floating's a weekend priority ~ My happy corner, that mug says 'Good Morning' and it's always a good one when it starts in this spot ~  The chickens are running around the front yard of a house down the street.  The families two kids take care of them and sell the eggs on Fridays, we buy them and if we recycle the cartoon it's $1 off. Little entrepreneurs and environmentalists.
A visit from my girl friend of  30 years ~ A day at the races at Santa Anita ~ It wouldn't be summer without smores on the fire pit. ~ And juicing, to cancel out the smores.
A beautiful day in Santa Barbara means lunch at Pascucci because the garlic bread is heaven on earth ~ Selfie x 2 ~ And a new little gem of a discovery C'est Cheese.
My daughter on the Red Carpet for the Crystal and Lucy Awards. A great and inspiring evening in a room full of incredibly powerful women.
An impromptu mother/daughter stop at Lake Shrine. I'd highly recommend a stroll around the lake. A little contemplation couldn't hurt.
We watched as the little Hummingbird egg turned into a baby which now hangs out in our backyard ~ And that's Franklin Irving, found wounded on our street. He stayed a while to mend in a corner of our vegetable garden hiding under some mint until there was room for him at the turtle sanctuary, yes there was a waiting list, who knew! He seemed happy to reunite with other turtles and jumped right into the pond.
Discovered a new favorite restaurant, Gracias Madres, it's stunning, it's Mexican, it's vegan and it's genius ~ Only in Cali do stores have gorgeous patios, this one at Ralph Lauren's in Malibu. ~ And I'm cheating with one July picture because who could resist Daisy in all her Patriotic Glory.

Happy July!
